FPV drones and EW: why a jammer does not always work
An FPV drone is not a Mavic. It is faster, more manoeuvrable and often flies at very low altitude. RF jamming can stop it, but not always. Here is why 'buy a jammer' is not a strategy.

It flies low, fast, and often takes unobvious routes. This makes it a difficult target for classical detection and suppression capabilities.
How is FPV different from Mavic?
| Parameter | Mavic | FPV |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | moderate | high |
| Height | average | low |
| Maneuver | limited | high |
| Channel | radio | radio or fiber optic |
| Arrival time | minutes | tens of seconds |
Why rap doesn't always work
- Fiber optic Cable control, radio suppression is useless.
- Autonomous mission The drone flies to predetermined coordinates.
- Rapid change of frequencies. The interference must cover a range, not just one frequency.
- Low height. Terrain and buildings screen the signal.
- Short time. Only seconds left to react.
How to detect FPV
A combination is needed: radar for long-range warning, optics for confirmation, and acoustics for near-field. At low altitudes, distributed sensors and blind spot coverage are especially important.
How to influence
- Laser suppression of optics and damage to the airframe.
- Kinetic interception, if debris and rules allow.
- Network or physical barrier at the near end.
- REP - only if there is a radio channel and there is time.
Why “buy a jammer” is not a strategy
One suppressor does not cover the object. We need detection, confirmation, application rules and several tools. Additionally, a powerful RAP can interfere with your subject. Therefore, the project begins with a threat model, rather than with a selection of the “most powerful jammer.”
layer vs FPV
The radar detects the target on the approaches, the optics confirm it, the electronic radar tries to stop it, the laser and interception close the last line. For FPV, reaction speed is especially important: the time from detection to impact should be less than the approach time.
