RF jamming against drones: what it can do, what it cannot, and why one jammer is not enough

RF jamming does not magically switch a drone off. It creates interference in the band the aircraft uses: control link, video or navigation. If the drone flies autonomously or over fibre-optic cable, classic jamming may do nothing.

The RF jamming does not magically “turn off” the drone. It creates interference in the range that the device uses: control channel, video signal or navigation. If the drone operates autonomously or via fiber optics, classic jamming may not work.

How suppression works

A commercial quadcopter typically uses several bands: 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz for communications and video, 1.2–1.5 GHz for navigation and telemetry. Interference in the desired range increases the noise level and breaks the channel. The drone either hovers, goes to land, or returns at the last command.

RangeWhat suppressesLimitation
2.4 GHzControl and videoMany drones are moving to 5.8 GHz
5.8 GHzVideo and controlRequires direction
1.2–1.5 GHzNavigation and telemetryMay affect the property's GPS
433/868 MHzRemotes and telemetryDepends on region

What can be suppressed

  • Commercial drones with radio control channel.
  • FPV drones within the operator's line of sight.
  • Drones using GNSS for navigation.
  • Devices that do not have an autonomous flight mission.

What not to suppress

  • Autonomous drones The flight mission is predetermined; no radio channel needed.
  • Fiber optic drones Control is via cable, radio jamming is useless.
  • Inertial systems Without GNSS, the drone can continue on its course.
  • Roy Simultaneously suppressing dozens of channels requires power and control.

Electromagnetic compatibility

A powerful suppressor is an emitter. In a factory, airport or substation, it can affect communications, sensors, SCADA and GPS synchronization. Therefore, frequency windows, directivity and exclusion zones are calculated before deployment. In some cases, the electronic transmission system is used only in certain sectors or is switched off for the duration of technological operations.

Project Rule

First electromagnetic compatibility, then power. If the RF jamming interferes with the object, it will not be able to operate in a real alarm.

REB, optics and laser: layer

RF jamming is the first line because it is cheap and works at a range of up to 5 km. The optics confirm the target and prevent the operator from shooting at birds. Laser and interception cover targets that have not been suppressed. Only together they give a sustainable result.

Why didn't the jammer stop the drone?
There are several possible reasons: different range, autonomous flight, fiber optics, insufficient power or directionality. You need to look at the specific type of goal.
Is RF jamming dangerous for people?
Powerful radiation requires restricted zones and safety calculations. Household jammers and professional systems are different classes of equipment.
Is it possible to use RF jamming at a substation?
Only after calculating electromagnetic compatibility. Suppression may be prohibited in some areas.
What to do with a fiber optic drone?
Detect with optics and radar, act with laser or intercept. Radio jamming doesn't work here.
